Dorchester Brings It Home
The Dorchester Lions boys under 12, 14 and 19 boys’ teams dazzled spectators by their style of play at the just concluded Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) in Lancaster, Massachusetts on June 25 -27. The Massachusetts Tournament of Champions is a season-ending tournament sponsored by Mass Youth Soccer that brings together age/gender group champions from town travel leagues across the State. The three Dorchesterteams were representatives of the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) league. The Dorchesterteams arrived here after a grueling 10 week season and league playoffs.
In championship play, the U12 Division 2 team defeated Auburn, 4-0; Ludlow, 4-1 and Sandwich, 6-0 in the group stages to advance to the semifinals. They beat Lowell, 4-0 in the semis to advance to the finals. In the final game they defeated Hudson, 4-1 in overtime to take the State crown in their age group.
Meanwhile, the U14 Division 1 team started their campaign on a down note. They lost 1-0 to Weymouthin the first match of their group stage. Determined to right their ship, they bounced back to defeat Wilmington, 8-0 and Cold Springs, 4-1 to advance to the semifinals by the skin of their teeth as a wildcard team. They beat Fall River, 4-0 in the semifinal game and Groton-Dunstable, 2-1 in the finals to also take the State crown.
Not to be outdone, the ‘Senior Boys’ (the U19 team) as they are fondly called stepped up to the plate. This team is a very close nit group that has been together for over 8 years and it shows in the way they play the game. The group has on numerous occasions come very close to winning it all at MTOC. In the past, they’ve suffered heartbreaking loses in the semifinal and final games. With the knowledge that this may be their last chance to be called State Champions, they left no stone unturned in making sure they bring home the title to Dorchester. They commenced the group stages and in fact the whole tournament in style by beating JBO Celtic, 4-1; Amesbury, 3-0; Falmouth, 4-3 and Worcester, 6-0 to move to the semifinals. They defeated Fall River, 7-2 in the semifinals and JBO Celtics, 4-1 in the finals to be crowned State champions. In addition to winning the State title they also won the Sportsmanship Award. This award goes to the team that displayed fair play and good sportsmanship on the field throughout the tournament.
Congratulations Dorchester Lions for a season like no other.
